Replacing starter

My 1981 Ford E303 with the 460 7.5L Gas engine seems to have a dead starter.

I wondered if anyone knows how to replace this? It is currently sitting on the street and I need to be able to work quickly before the cops are called (you can't work on cars in the street in my neighborhood, and I can't move the truck until i do)

Thanks

If it's just the alternator, a freshly charged battery should be able to get you a few miles (or to the closest closed area that you can use to work on it).

As for replacement, I did the job on a 1988 5.0, but I wouldn't imagine it's that difficult. My haynes manual did a good job of helping me identify the components in question and a rotary cut-off blade helped with a siezed bolt.

Ksnarf,

Raise the right front of the van and put a jack stand under it. Disconnect the battery ground wire. Go under the van and look up near the back of the engine on the passenger's side and you will see the starter. disconnect the wires from it, noting the orintation of them and remove the two bolts holding the starter in place. Pull out the starter.

Put the new one in place of the old one, tighten the two bolts, reattach the wires, connect the battery ground wire. Crank 'er up.

Be sure to inspect the wiring on the starter for any damage due to heat and repair if nessasary. This may be all that is wrong with it. If repairs are nessasary, again, remove the battery ground wire before doing the repairs.

Two tips on any starter replacement.

Tighten down the bolts evenly and if the nose cone is cast material (most are) do not overtighten it or you can easily crack the case (most a GM warning).

Also verify that the problem is not the starter solenoid. If the solenoid is bad nothing will happen when you turn the key.

u can always hit a bad starter with a hammer to unfreeze it.

this will get u to off the street. never had a starter go that this trick didn't work.

u got 2 hit it pretty hard with a metal hammer, good luck.

there is usually an open haynes manual at the parts stores, you can take a look not 2 tough a job.
