Audi R10

Audi R10
For those that haven't heard - Audi is replacing (prehaps the most successful sportscar ever) the R8, with the R10.
The R10, which Audi will compete at Le Mans, Sebring and various other endurance races will be DIESEL POWERED.
An all aluminium 5.5l V12 turbo diesel making 650hp and 820lbft will replace the direct injection turbo petrol 3.8l V8 in the R8.
It appears that the racing world is waking up and smelling the black smoke
Will be interesting to see how it performs.

yeah the F1 turbos, especially BMWs were amazing, i dont know much about them though.......anyone have any good sites that i can learn more?
Also, although the current F1 racing seems to really just stink.......(my humble opinion) the cars are still amazing.......and although they were getting 1500 HP out of 1.5 liters, i think 1000 HP out of a 3.0 liter V-10 naturally aspirated is still pretty dam amazing.
Although good ole pushrods are pumping out 700 in Nascar and spinnin past 9000 RPMs........point is these are the days of the piston engine its just amazing.
PS: A month or 2 ago Car and Driver had a little story on the sparkplugs on recent F1 cars......the 10 spark plugs were the heaviest pieces of equipment on the car according to size, volume, etc etc.....they had to change it before they dropped them (i believe champion makes them) It was the most interesting atricle on spark plugs every written haha.

HP numbers are far far from everything. The R10 also happens to put out over 800 ft/lbs of torque. Often higher reving gas engiens may put out substanially more hp, but lower torque.
Also remember these engiens have to be designed ot only within certain restrictions, but they also have to relaibly last under racing conditions for as long as 24hrs. A qualifying motor is one things, a 500 mile motor, another, adn a 24 hr motor is yet another!

i forgot another interesting thing about the Audi R8 When it debuted in le mans they had to change out the gearbox, it only took like 10 minutes (i forget the exact time but it was a very short time) and thats when all the other teams said UHHHH OOOOO, were screwed. Audi had like a little tinker toy where they could just R&R real quickly during the race.
