I have replaces the bushing in my clutch assembly now and still can't easily get the truck in reverse. I have been in trucks that had wear in the assembly and also experienced that unless you can squat better than 300lbs you may not get the truck to start. I don't have that problem, she starts right up when my wife pushes the pedal in. The truck grinds when you attempt to drop it in Reverse while the truck is running, no problem with the truck off or if it is rolling forward ever so slightly. Am I just loosing a synchronizer, or is there an adjustment to be made?
Do you still have the Dual Mass Flywheel? I had to replace mine about 2 months ago. Some of the symptoms towards the end was not wanting to go into reverse without grinding, & sometimes first if I stopped in neutral an let out the clutch. Also hand a clunk when the engine was turned off. Later it started a vibration while driving. When I pulled the flywheel the inner bearing from the primary flywheel to the secondary flywheel had come apart and all of the bearings had shifted to one side making the flywheel off center. Just a thought.
Seatow, how far off of the floor does the pedal have to be for the clutch to start to engage? Just barely off the floor? Or more like halfway up?
Another thing that might help is to jack the rear end off the ground and put the truck in gear, see if the wheels spin with the clutch all the way down. That would indicate that your clutch is not completly disengaging.
Plowhand- I am not sure we have the same problem, but i will ask your opinion anyway. When I shut off my truck ir rattles, clanks, and vibrates. And it is not diesel rattle/vibration because I have been in many other diesels that don't sound like mine. It sounds bad, real bad, almost to the piont where I am almost embarrassed when i shut 'er down. I have asked friends to drive it and tell me what they thought. They all say it feels fine. I never experienced a bad clutch so i have no idea what to look for. First gear grinds a little when I downshift. Other than that the clutch is smooth, shifts smooth. I suspect it is my DMFW and clutch set up. Does anyone have a second opinion.
It would of course affect all gears, I want him make sure that all doubt is removed on the condition and operation of the clutch so he can move on from there.
Kwikordead, good idea I'll give it a shot. I am doubting the clutch because the trucks I have been in that had problems with clutch throw wouldn't allow the truck to start unless you stomped the clutch pedal until it felt like it would break. Your idea will probably complete my theory. I am doubting it being the flywheel because of otherwise smooth driveline operation. Is their anyway the linkage or the shifter itself could be out of adjustment?
