I'm planning on buying a 2006 Quigley 4 x 4 van and would like some diesel owners opinions.
I haven't decided on the diesel yet, but have had some comments on diesels being inefficent unloaded. My business in making signs. I don't run a loaded van very often. I do have a car trailer and several 3800 lb Pontiacs that get moved around, bought/sold, swapmeets, and such. I also plan on getting a small backhoe (25-40 hp) that will probably have a heavy equptment trailer at some time.
I would like some feedback on buying a diesel. Do you think that it would be beneficial to me? I do have a heavy foot, so boosting won't be an issue and everything up here in NY is a drive! I need to goto into NJ twice a week (200 mls round trip) and would like that to factor into your opinions. Good for fuel prices! NY sucks for fuel costs!
Where diesel loses efficiency is when distances are short. As soon as travel distance increases, the efficiency increases. I notice when I drive between job sites and stop and start the engine, I use more fuel than when I drive for 1/2 hour or longer. Comparing to a coworker who has a similar setup to me but with a V10, I am still better on the short distances, but way better over the long haul. When loaded, I kill him to the point of almost doubling distance for equal amount of fuel.
I attribute it to the extra weight needing a bigger push to get moving.
Since I don't fully understand diesel basics, I was hoping for some more input towards my question. Maybe I didn't ask this correctly? Seemed to get a few views over the last few days.
If there is a better way to ask this, please let me know? If unclear as to what I'm asking, please let me know? I'm planning on spending a lot of money for this van. I want to try to make the best long term decision possible.
Since you are posting on a Ford forum my guess is that you would like to know how well the Ford diesels do on fuel mileage unloaded. With that in mind, I can only speak for my truck which is a Ford F250 Lariat with a 6.0L diesel. Unloaded it get between 16 and 19 mpg, when pulling a 6000# TT, it gets between 10 and 12 mpg depending on how I drive. The engine performs like a gasser and in my case it has been a dependable vehicle for towing and beating around town. It currently has 58,000 miles on it towing the TT from So Cal to Alaska and beyond virtually trouble free. I hope this helps.
