Steer Box Rebuild?

I just ordered a complete seal kit for my power steering box, in my 76 f100. Just wondered if anyone has rebuilt one of these, and if there are any particular tips I should be aware of. THANKS!

i've rebuilt a couple and one of them was my drilled and tapped boxes and it was really easy! just make sure to get some brake cleaner or gas and CLEAN everything. also before you button everything up, remember to pour just a little bit of fluid in so it helps lube everything up better

i had a really badazz article that i used but i can't find it. i'll see if i can dig it up. its not of your exact box but it should be very close to the same thing

EDIT... ok here it is i found it, https://www.ford-trucks.com/lc/lc.ph.../sbr/index.htm

have fun

its not bad but like he said put a little fluid on everything, especially the seal when you are sliding the splined shaft back in. also i think you are supposed to loosen the backlash adjust up almost all the way? One thing is to make sure you have a seal driver or something the right size to get that new seal in. I think the hardest part was getting the pitman arm off to tell you the truth.

Are you doing a complete rebuild or just the basic seal kit? I did a complete rebuild when I tapped my box (steering box that is) for the hydro but really I think most people will only need the basic seals replaced, like the sector shaft seal and the steering shaft.

Mine always comes off pretty easy, but its not rusted at all... I just got a cheapo $10 pitman arm puller from AZ and it work very well when paired with an air socket wrench...then that broke wo I used a 1/2" socket wrench for it and that worked just as well, but longer...

mine wasnt rusted at all(due to the leaking fluid) but i had to use a heavy duty air impact to get it off using a puller.

guess yours was tourqued tighter. but now that I think about it, it was pretty hard using the socket wrench. I tend to have worse luck with pulling serp. belt pullies...

I ordered the complete seal kit, but it looks like i pretty much have to take the entire thing apart to do it anyways. that way I can clean everything up and all. The box doesnt have anyprobles, just leaks.
