superchips 1715 on v10

Just wondering if anyone has a performance tune running 87 octane? I can get 90 octane for the same price as 87, so I was thinking about installing the performance tune and running the 90. I have read that these motors use a knock sensor so if it detects ping it will pull the timing, in which case it would be comparable to the factoy program maybe even less timing?

Do you mean run 90 octane with an 87 octane tune? Yeah, you can do that, but you won't get any benefit from doing it. The changes to the spark advance table in the 87 octane tune aren't going to be enough to take full advantage of 90. If you don't already have a Superchips 1715, we can custom program an SCT XCalibrator2 with a program made for 90 octane.

Don't count on the factory knock sensor for anything other than very minor ping. Often, the computer can't pull timing back fast enough to prevent ping.

I have heard mine ping on mid-grade 89 octane on towing tune. I usually run mine on the 87 tune till I do a lot of towing which is in the summer months. Then I run the 91-93 octane towing tune.

Shad, does your engine ping with the 91 octane? Mine pings no matter what octane I use. I am running the 1715 Tow program. Fuel filter change and MAF cleaning made no difference.

I did a 3500 mile trip this summer pulling my travel trailer running it on the tow program and had no pinging running premium fuel. As soon as I got back I put it on the 87 octane progam and ran it a few months. With a full tank of 87 octane fuel I thought I would try to run the tow-performance program and all I got was pinging. So I definatly would say the fuel has a lot to do with it. I have towed with and without the program installed and it does make a difference to me. The mileage is no different though. Anyway I have not heard any pinging with premium fuel yet....
