i've been toying around with the idea of putting a flat bed on my truck. it's an 89 f150 with a reg cab and a long bed. i've got a local fabricator that'll do it for me for about 1000. that sound like a good price? i've seen "flat beds" on tacomas that seem to sit real low and have "humps" for the tires, more or less a wheel well i guess? i've also seen them with cut outs for the wheel/tire area. anyone have pictures or ideas. input is very welcome. would i have to get some sort of headache rack, or would that vary by state? law wise.
i have a friend that put a flat bed on a 94 f250 and it looks good for what he uses it for. it came with the headache and there is no gap for the wheels, it sits flush with the frame i believe
if you check my gallery u can see mine. i dont have any kind wheel wells on mine, on ive only bottomed out once, with about 1500 pounds of dirt in it on a big bump, but didnt hurt it. mines wood, and ive beat the crap out of it, with no problems. the cross tubes are 3 inch gas pipe. i put a roll bar on it, close to a headache rack, just weld some expanded metal in there. for the wood and fasteners i paid 150, all the pipe was scraps we had.
Years ago I made a flad bed out of my truck at the time. I bought some I-beam at the local metal scrap yard and had it welded to the frame, and then built the deck. The added height of the I-beam gave me enough clearance for it and I put some Ford Maverick tail lights on it in the rear bumper. The only problem was the gas filler and what to do with it and the local police wanted mud flaps put on it. I traded it before I fixed either problem but would not hesitate to do it again.
with the price of steel right now, you better be prepared to pay an elbow and and butthole for it. i think if i had to do a all metal one, id go with steel crossmembers, with a aluminum diamond plate deck. the steel in my opinion just gets rusty to quick for a deck, unless you hawk up the money to line x or the like for it.
