Backspacing is the distance the hub is from the inside of the wheel. To measure it, lay a straightedge across the back of your wheel and measure from there to the backside of the part of the wheel the lugs are. It determines how far the wheel will stick out from the vehicle. It's important to knowbackspacing for new wheels to make sure they wont rub on anything when fully turned. Thats the general idea.
