yo yall,
i have been getting really weird codes out of my truck's computer so i decided to get another out of the wrecking yard the other day, but it gives me weird info. also.
my truck is a 1986 Ranger 2.9 V6/5sp/4X4 part of the tag on it says: EFI-SD6
the truck in the wrecking yard is a 1987 Ranger 2.9/Auto/2wd this one says EFI-SD22A
All I've ever heard is that the part numbers need to match exactly. In your case, one thing I noticed right away is that your truck has a 5 speed and you've inserted an ECM for a truck with an auto. I'd assume the auto had OD by the vintage; with that in mind this ECM is looking for a torque converter that does not exist in your truck. That right there is reason for a DTC.
weird codes being things that are working fine as far as i can tell.
i get code 18 from the continuous memory which means loss of tach input/IDM circuit failure/SPOUT circuit grounded
this is from How to Understand , Service and Modify Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control by Charles O. Probst. in the past i have found this book to be the best as opposed to Haynes.
KOER #18 = SPOUT circuit open or spark angle word (SAW) circuit failure.
CM #18 = Loss of tach input/IDM circuit failure/SPOUT circuit grounded.
There's a smorgasboard of codes associated with A/T's that you could/might see, depending on what electronics are used and what the ECM is looking for and cannot find. Myself, I would be looking at the spout circuitry first. I would also use the ECM for the manual tranny. There are specific codes for ECM problems and code 18 is not one of them.
*Hopefully no echos.

thanks for the help i actually figured out the code 18 myself after scracting my head for a while... it was from the CM and there was nothing physically wrong with the wiring. the resistor on the wire from the coil to the computer was bad, so i went to the wrecking yard and got a good one and spliced it in.
now all i have is a code 33 which i think is totally bogus. I am using a AutoXray scanner and it says i didnt initiate the test correctly, but the book says something about the egr valve not opening and i know everything related to the egr is good.
KOER and/or CM #33 = EGR valve fault/not closing properly.
I don't know the particulars on your scanner but if you failed to check for KOEO codes perhaps this is why it's notifying you that you didn't initiate the test correctly. Testing for KOEO codes must be done first as well as eliminating any DTC's that surface in the KOEO test. Said another way, proceeding on to KOER testing is meaningless without having DTC #11 for the KOEO test as also would be proceeding from KOER to CM testing without first receiving DTC #11 for both KOEO and KOER.
