To night I came home from work picked up my daughter to bring her to her concert. We jumped into the Bronco startedto back out of the driveway all of a sudden I start to smell something. It got stronger smelling not sure if there was smoke then the lights dimmed the voltmeter dropped to 8volts jumped back up then down again. I threw it in drive and went flying back in the driveway shut it off. Poped open the hood didn't smell anything burning there, ran into the garage grabbed a wrench and dissconected the battery. Jumped it my pickup and went to the concert. I haven't looked at yet any suggestions were to start? I think it was inside smelled nothing out side.
not enough info to tell you anything definate here. What year/engine/tranny/mods? I know you said you have not looked at it yet, but you need to see if you can find burnt wiring. Be sure to check the + battery cables for knicks that may have been touching metal.
If it wasn't something under the hood, what accessories were ON? Heat, radio, headlights, all of the above? When you have looked at it in the light of day, it will probably be obvious if it smelled as strong as you say. If its not readily visible, it may be something inside or under the dash. Thats about the best guessing I can do without more info.
Ok I spent some time on this thing Ican't see any burnt wires. I spent most of the day on it yesterday, checked batt. cables alt. plugs all wires look fine. There was a alarm system and a bunch of other crap!! I took it all out the previous owner had all kinds of stuff in this. Itook it all out but nothing looks burnt or melted. When it happend last week everything was on (lights, heater, radio,). The rear defogger was not on. By the way its a 90 5.0l automatic w/od no mods except for changing rear ratio to 410. Next I have to pull the front out to re ratio that one so I can use 4 wheel drive if I need it.
Sounds like it's time to try and duplicate the scenario, but with a helper or two. Multiple noses and eyes are much better. This should get you into the area.
You might want to try to duplicate it without the engine running first and progressively turn on everything that was running when it first occured. If can't dup it then start it up with same process.
You probably already thought of this yourself. Good luck!
Let your nose do the work on this one. Burnt wiring, insulation, etc, will reek for months. (Greystreak burned over two years ago and STILL smells of charred plastic and vinyl). I am certain you will recognize the odor should you be re-acclamated with it. You may look a little silly doing it but sniff around til you find something that smells familiar.
If the blower motor was running, give particular attention to that area as the resistors that regulate blower speed get very hot when they are in operation. Could be that wiring came loose and fell onto one of them. This is purely speculation but its the first thing that comes to mind when you talk about things that would be hot enough to be incendiary AND INSIDE the cabin.
