Would boxing the frame on an 89 F150 regular cab short box be a good idea. Ive been building a sorda show/offroad/daily driver/work truck for about a year now and I like the look of the boxed frame, and i'd like to give it a try. Would this be a bad idea? Im putting a 3 inch suspension lift in so I dont think the lack of flex in the frame will be bad, but Im still not sure. Has anyone ever done this? Any help is great....
Boxing a frame makes it stiffer, if done correctly, but can cause the frame to crack or tear instead of flexing.
The stiffer something is, the less it likes shock-loads. The more flexible something is, the worse the handling is.
It's a tradeoff, and sometimes difficult to determine where the "right" point is.
This is the reason why F1 cars can be so stiff - silky smooth tracks requiring extreme degrees of handling... and why funny cars are designed to flex as much as they do (sometimes up to 10-15 degrees of chassis twist!).
