I have a 64 4WD 1/2 ton truck and am thinking real seriously about putting a no slip or at least a minimum slkip third member in it, maybe both if they aren't to pricy. i read on a post a coupla years ago where a feller knew where to get them fairly cheap but lost the thread when the site went belly up on account of Yahoo and went to MSN. has anyone done this???? thanks
It dpends on which rear axle you have, it could be the Dana 44(integral carrier-rear cover), or the Ford 9"(removeable carrier). They both have limited slip and Detroit Locker style carriers available. You could also get several gear type limited slip units.
Try Randy's Ring and Pinion, Currie, Drivetrain Specialists, a Goggle for rear axle should get many hits. Summit Racing likely has several choices in stock.
If you're looking to go do some serious off road stuff, you may want to look at an air locker. But that might not be a good choice for you or it may be too expensive (I'm not sure what they cost).
My choice was a Powertrax Lock-Right Locker. It will handle anything you can throw at it, from drag racing to rock crawling and was easy to install. If you want to see if it works check out my gallery.
Tiremine, looked at your gallery and noticed the panard bar install. Can you help me with how you attached the bar at the axle and the length. Did you get it from the junk yard or fab it yourself
I love my Powertrax in my jeep, but I don't recomend them. both the Powertrax and the lockright add slack to the driveline. the result is a clunking feeling, similar to a busted U joint. They are stronger than the spidergears they replace, but becuase they reuse the original carrier, they are still weaker than the more expensive units.
limited slips and Lockers aren't exactly the same thing. and you don't exactly use them for the same thing, normaly. Limited slips don't give 100% lockup, and they are progressive in there engagement. They are great for street traction, but they do have clutch packs they will wear out over time. Full lockers give 100% lockup between both wheels. But its basicly all or nothing. The give great traction in mud and sand, but can be tempremental on the street.
jrs,
The panhard bar attaches to the axle with a bracket like the one thats welded to the frame only it's a little longer. The bar is 30 inches long. I have it off right now because I wasn't happy with the angle. I want to get it parrallel with the axle tube. It came from one of the big box parts places but would be very easy to fabricate. It's just a peice of pipe with two hiem joints.
Part two. I agree with beater on some of his comments on the Powertrax. It has some quirks but nothing I can't live with. The only one I would warn about is if you mat it in a long turn the truck will want to come around but as he said it's all or nothing.
