What front axel is in a 78 Ford Ranger 150? I hear it is the the one to use for a sas swap why. And why do some people talk a bout a d44 solid axel what is that? I know i dont know anything and your probably thinking im an idiot. I cant find any answers ive been searching all night and im trying to decide if its worth lifting a 95 F-150 with TTB.
that woudl be a solid dana 44, and this woudl be the axle oyu would want to swap into that 95..jsut get all the susp parts off the 78 and use them on the 95, not too much fabbing required
Ok but i dont think i understand the TTB system fully yet because i looked at this site http://soderblom.net/bronco/tech/D44solid/index.html and with that set up you still use radius arms. What for? and if it is the same axel how is it stronger. Im really lost. Ive been reading on this for 2 hours now. Every one says do a search dont ask us. Well I search and dont find much on here exept for more people saying to search. Im sounding like an idiot I know. I dont really know much about Drivelines yet. Every one on here talks way above my head. Also what rear end would be in this 78 truck? Should i go to a 9 inch? Or is there a better one than a 9 inch?

How much are you willing to spend on this entire project, how tall of a tire do you want to run, and hardcore of 4wheelin are you going to do, and lastly what kind of skills and tools do you own to do something like this?
First if you can answer those few items it will make this entire process soooooooooooo much more easier to do.
Wise guy the reason that even though the ttb is also a D44 that the solid D44 is better doesn't have anything to do with the axles strength in and of itself but rather the ttb has bushings and other stuff that wears out pretty fast causing alignment issues, and tire wear expecially if you do any offroading with it. Plus the passenger side axle has one extra ujoint in it on the ttb.
Yes the rear in the 78 will be a 9"
and I agree with mustang as yourself those questions if your gonna run under a 35" tire and do moderate wheeling the D44 solid front will work for you most likely, and be the cheapest, and easiest route to add soem strength to the frontend, D60 would be better (I can't believe I typed that) but there is a lot of cost in getting one and takes soem extra work to get them in your truck.
I plan on a 6 inch Skyjacker lift kit which does 4 and a half front 6 rear i believe. I will run either no b igger than 35 inch tire but probably no smaller than 34. I will only be doing some moterate offroading some good mud some up and down hills no rocks or anything to crazy but i could see me getting into some nice mud hole or up some slick hills with a decent grade. If strenght is not the problem then I may be ok these parts you talk about wearing out will the fact that I take extreemly good care of my truck help that? Or is it just inevidable? And should i go to the nine inch rear end? If i do should i find a factory Ford posi rear end or buy a locker? And lastly can my front end handle having a locker. I am really sorry if im anoying you guys but i have tried searching other places. On this site all i can find is a bunch of people telling us TTB fools to search and else were every one talks over my head. With the answers to these questins i think i can go on from here allright with out bugging any one any farther.
the pivot bushings are the really bad point on the TTB, and it's pretty much inevitable they will wear out, and lifting a ttb makes it worse. Yes a D44 can handle a locker, and the Ford 9" is a pretty good axle, I am running 35s and 800+hp in mud without breaking either the D44 front, or my 9" rear. but I just go in a straight line so mine doesn't count or so I have been told.
If you dont think I will break anything in my front end with a locker on it and your running 800 horses on yours i think i will be ok. How often are you talkin changing bushings and how hard are they to change? I finally figured out the spool locker thing thanks to the guy at Summit. If you think I should I will probably just buy a 9 inch rear end and a Detroit locker for it. Do you think i should even put one in the front?
I don't know how often you would end up changing the bushings on the TTb I run a solid D44 front with a spool, and a 9" rear also with a spool.
Watch ebay you can buy 31 spl used detroit lockers that were used in nextal cup cars for one race pretty cheap.
I'd go with a new limted slip for the front, as since you are going with a detroit for the rear i think a limited slip will do you real good up front. I would also get a complete set of polyurathan bushings, they will last longer then the stock rubber bushings as they are of a harder material.
