I am going to be putting in a new cam over the holiday week. I think Im going to go with the crane truck cam. It goes from 1200-4600 rpm which is the range im looking for. The truck is an 82' bronco. It is a daily driver and I dont tow anything and if I do its only once or twice a year. I was wondering a few things, Whould this cam be best with my offy dp and holley 390 w/3.70's? Also, which lifters should I get? Also, should I maybe consider chebby 1.7 rockers off of a 250 six? I am also puttin on msd 6a ingnition and a new coil. Lastly, is it better to get both timing gears metal or keep one of them that fiber/nylon type of material? thanks!
You wanna keep the timing gears the same material/ matched, otherwise, you won't get very far.
Stock REPLACEMENT lifters should be fine...you can spend the extra dough and get the crane if your unsure.
The cam you selected should work well.
Wouldn't worry about adding more lift via chevy rockers, if your looking at the cam with .458/.487 at the valve with 1.6 rocker ratio...a 1.75 rocker would put the lift on the exhaust side at .529 at the valve and .514 with a 1.7 ratio. Then replacing the springs would be mandatory.
With that said, now would be a good time to replace the springs if they are high mile stockers...
Good luck

Thanks guys. The head has less than 3k on it so Im going to leave the springs. I've been told that I need hydraulic lifters for this cam. Now since I dont have both timing gears metal on there now, should I grease them up when I get them both with metal teeth?
They should be oiled by the engine oiling system. it wouldn't be a bad idea to stick your finger on the bottom of the timing cover and pickup some oil to smear on the gears though, or just put some motor oil on the gears so they don't run dry for the first couple seconds.
Your combo sounds good. When I put an isky 256 cam in my 95 with 160k, the stock timing gears were perfect. I couldnt believe how well they looked. I did end up using another set of stock gears because of time and availability constraints. I havent noticed any problems yet. My point is you can probably use either steel or stock and be ok. Steel is said have a noticable whine though.
Machman, how do you like the 256? Yeah I was told by a buddy that the crane truck cam is a good one b/c of the different lift and exhaust duration... im not positive to be sure. I just know the higher the more performance. I need a cam that has a pretty smooth idle b/c it get cold around these parts in the winter ya know. I saw the comp cam kit on ebay jsut today, i would be inbetween th 260 n the 268. Its a daily driven truck with 3.70 so I dont need to go more than 4500-5000rpm, but I love low end power. I dont go one the freeway for more than 15 minutes a day anyway.
