for some reason, when I hook a trailer up on my truck (97 f150), the running lights on the trailer are always on, even when the truck lights are off. Regular 4 prong plug. Any ideas?
Sounds like you got a wire shorted to 12 v somewhere. Take a test light and check each pin on the truck end of the plug to see if there is 12 volts on one pin with everything turned off. If one pin has 12 volts, follow it --
You didn't say if the trailer has a battery installed for any reason .......
the brown wire is the tail light wire and is not only when the lights are on. under the truck by the spare tire there is a plug and bunch of wires. the RED wire is always hot. somehow you got the brown trailer plug wire connected to the RED 12 volt wire, not the tail light wire.
