What year? That's an awful lot of stress, 400 HP, I don't think the Ranger engine is going to easily make that, especially if you have one of the older ones. You're going to need exhaust, intake, turbo/supercharger, headers, custom chip, everything.

Why are you doing this again?

we are buildig a baja truck out of a early 90s ranger. i dont know the year yet we are still shopping, but we can get any year block, and
for the class we want to be in it needs to be under 4.5. and we thought the 4.0 would be our best choice, but maybe it isnt do you have any other ideas?

Well DEFINETLY get a new 4.0L. The older ones have 160HP, whereas the new ones have either 207 or 215, I'm not sure which.

You're going to need a new tranny, none of the stock ones can take anywhere close to that much hp or torque.

I'd think there would be more performance stuff for the 4.2L(?) engine out of a Crown Vic since it's a police interceptor, but I'm not sure.

Sven Pruett was working on the new 4.0s but I can't find a link to his companies site anymore, Vanir Technologies.

I'd stick with the OHV 4.0L. It comes across to me as waaay more durable than a OHC 4.0L.

The only question is will 400hp's on a v6 have ANY low end or will it turn out to be akin to a Honda s2000 that needs several thousand revs and a 6-speed tranny without an overdrive to get up and go and need to be rebuilt every weekend like an average race car?

The 4.2L? A lot of work to swap to another v6. 4.6L from a cop car (a stock engine, mind you)? Definitely not an easy swap, even for the handful that are trying it right now in the Ranger world...

If your going to get 400 out of a ranger, like rangerpilot said, your going to need EVERYTHING! Like new rods/ pistons/ crank/ cam/ pushrods/ rockers/valve springs/heads /headers/ chip, turbo/ ignition goodies/ fine tuned exhaust/ intake/ larger injectors/ recalibrated MAF/ transmission adapter / bigger tranny. And a whole heck of a lot of money. It sounds like fun!

The Bush Series Ran 4.5 Liter V-6"s Before Going To The V-8 In Nascar. They Were Around 500 Hp. They Were More Than Likley Punched Out 3.8 Liter V-6"s. Remember Mark Martin"s Winn Dixie T-bird, It Would Romp!!!!!!!!!! At Any Rate, I Would Give Rousch Racing A Call , They May Be Able To Help! I Think Racer Walsh Also Use To Carry Some Off The Nascar V-6 Stuff.

Mm that's what I meant, the 4.6L out of a cop car. I thought it was 4.2L. I agree call Roush, good performance products and would know a lot about it.
How much money are you willing to spend here? Might just wanna drop a 302 in it, lots of performance stuff available, but yeah, you'll still need to do a performance rebuild.

The S2000 doesn't have an OD?
