Yes there are headgasket problems, but it seems it's more often w/ programmers be it the Predator, Superchips, Banks, whatever. Document all problems and take it to the dealer each time. If you get fluid spewing out of your tank, they'll replace the cap. That's where I'm at w/ mine. Don't worry about it till it happens. For now, use Diesel Kleen White bottle from Wal mart each fill up, and the gray in the summer, it helps keep the motor lubed and is better for cold starts, helps mpgs too. There's also a filter that you can get to put in the oil line I think, it helps keep the radiator clean. Sometimes they get clogged and this starts the gasket problems. There's a thread on here somewhere about it. Change your oil every 5k, your fuel filters every 15k, and your tranny fluid and filter every 30k. That should be enough to open the floodgates for everyone else w/ real knowledge. BTW, we all love our trucks and wouldn't have anything else!!
I am Opening myself up here but oh well.............the deal with head gaskets is that the chips produce too much boost/power, and head bolts stretch under load. (please no hate mail!!, just stating the expected)
The head gasket problem was explained to me like this...
first problem ford had was: rough cold start, runing rough at start-up etc. Solution was to design a program (i.e flash) to fix this. They developed one that raised rpm's at idle and fixed the problem. HOWEVER, this created a problem on the other end of the power range. Too much Rpm=too much boost or power under heavy loads, and BAM, stretched head bolts, blown gaskets, etc. I have since heard of a new flash they have come up to reverse this, but is not known if we will again have cold start issues.
I could be totally wrong, just a messenger from local Ford diesel tech, going through ford deisel certification now.

my truck now has 85k and i got it with 84k and im scared that when my warranty expires then ill start having problems. i read about people that had problems with the head gaskets and the dealer fixed it but after the dealer replaces the gaskets do you still have to worry about blowing the head gaskets again.
Usually if you make it to that many miles you will be fine. Most problems seem to be under 30k. If the gasket blew and is replaced? If they use a better gasket than I'd think good to go, if not then... I think once a bolt streches it looses it's strength so I don't know if it's manditory to replace them when a gasket blows. Overall I'd be fine with what you have but I don't know if i'd chip it. The 03 made the most power yet of the 6.0.
thanks for all your knoledge ben . i want to chip it i already have the intake im looking for a good exhaust and what would you recomend me for a chip and how far do you think i can take it in horse power. please guide me the right direction with exhaust and chip
Get an SCT tune with the tranny upgrades or you will be getting trans work real soon. If you want some info on some one to get you the right setup send me a PM.

What ever you get I like a tuner that adds transmission data too. (increased line pressure and such) otherwise IMO as stated transmission work will be soon to follow. There are also "fuel adder" chips that add fuel but leave the transmission alone such as edge I think. The nice thing about fuel adders is that you can change settings on the fly where as tuners you have to access the chip and select a program. But I'd only get a tuner. A PM is a personal message.
