has anyone tried those emergency chains on your tires when you get stuck...im talking about those chains you slap on just to get out....like two chains across your tire...anyone try these...do they work? or are they a waste of money?

My dad said he used those a few times back in the 70s. He said they were pretty much worthless unless you put 3 sets on each drive wheel. By that time, you might as well put the chains on.

i cant imagine they would do much, they would pull you halfway or even a quarter up the rut, then you would slide right back into it.

I used something like it on a Camaro before, pretty much the only thing they are useful for is making the rut you are stuck in deeper.

I agree, I have used them years ago and you need more than one set per tire but they will help a lot when you use 3 or 4 per tire.

You'll spend about the same amount of money buying real chains as you would buying 3 sets of emergency chains... and would probably get better traction too; however, real ones will be a bit harder to put on.

don't you basically just drive over the full chains and then fasten them?

yeah, they can be a pain, as they like to loosen up after they settle.

I'd just get real chains.

here is a good article on installing chains.

http://www.tirechain.com/INSTALLATION_MENU.htm

definatly check your adusters after the 1st mile. I also check them every 10 miles or so on long trips or any time I have to get out of the truck anyways. If you use rubber adjusters take them off once a day. 30mph max but 25mph is a lot more comfortable.

i know these are meant for snow and all...around here, some roads are snowy, some are clear for miles. i live in illinois which i am pretty sure it is illegal to drive on the roads with them...whats your alls thoughts on this...should i just give up on traction and drive or is there any other ideas...this is a 2wd ford i6...without locking differential...i have one tire that goes...the rest are along for the ride...
