new user here. Have a couple of questions. I have a 73 4.2 truck with a 302 engine and a 4 speed manual trans. I'm in the process of re-building the engine (Stock mostly), but there is a lot of slop in the transmission shifter and shifting, also with the gearing the RPMS are fairly high on the highway. What is my best option. Rebuild the currect tranny or are there other 5 speed trannys that will bolt up that I could find in a junk yard ?
The question of swapping in a 5 speed in place of the 4 speed is a question on this board that never seems to get answered. If it has been done successfully, I guess the swappers are so happy with their swap they are too busy driving their rigs to tell us how it went. The 4 speed is a relatively bullet proof trans and will last forever. If you decide to have it rebuilt you can always go to a higher rear end ratio to drop your RPM's and with 1st gear you should still have plenty of torque and power to the ground to move just about anything. My '73 had 3:08 rears and would turn 2200 at 60 with 10.50 15's.
