Question A Manual Choke?

I just had the choke adjusted in the newly rebuilt Carter single barrel carb of my 300 I6 ('80 Custom SB Styleside) because I had to keep kicking it down to run/idle right since the onset of cold weather (well below freezing). This carb runs fine since the choke adjustment but the people who rebuilt it say it would be better if it had a manual choke since it has no heat stove. I ran the truck for 2 summers with no problem until a carb problem arose and got the rebuilt one which ran great until the cold weather, hence the choke adjustment. Cutting to the chase if I run this truck in cold weather and I need a manual choke setup they told me that the best cable would be from a large HD Ford truck (tandem axel type?) and not an aftermarket one as they don't hold up.
Any advice on where to get one of these should I decide to go that route? Thanks to any and all.

i bought a manual choke kit for my truck [82 F100 300 I6]about 13 years ago, it was the cheapest one they had at farm and fleet maybe 10 bucks at the time. it took about 30 mins to install in the dead of winter, bend a couple of brakets to hold the cable to the firewall and run it threw a hole in the firewall. it works great pump the gas twice pull the choke start it up and push the choke in about halfway.one other thing, all the cable is doing is pulling open a butterfly valve so i dont see why you'd need some heavy duty cable, and like i said mines been hooked up for atleast 13 years still works fine its holding up better then the rest of the truck

jimbo........does it engage the fast idle, or do you nurse the gas pedal along?

The choke butteryfly has a cable that runs down to the fast idle OR it SHOULD and is missing it. So anything you use to open the choke will move the fast idle at the same time. It might require you to adjust the fast idle screw to get it to your liking.

I also run a manual choke mainly because i don't have a 6volt out on the back of my alt anymore for the e-choke. I luv it for two reasons, can idle the truck up and work the brake and clutch when on tough obstacles and can idle it up when winching or charging someone when goin to jump them.
