New Psd Owner

I will soon be a first time owner of F250 PSD, CC, FX4, XLT(should be on the assembly line this week). I have been lurking for awhile and a new member for a
week or so now. Thought I would just say howdy and ask for some general
advise since this is my first diesel powered ride. Other than doing the PMs what
other pointers would you give.

I don't plan on any mods and I am in the Houston,TX area.

Thanks in advance

Welcome 'AND' congrats on the new rig!!

You'll soon get very many varying points of interest/info. to better your diesel experience, and aids in the life of your new powerhouse.. I just drive/use mine as I've always done, along with a small amout of breakin time before pulling heavy when new.. GOOD CLEAN fuel from a quality vendor.. Services on a 'regular basis', give it a small amout of warm time before pouring the coals to it.. Hardest thing to deal with, is the wait until it shows up at the Dealer!! Don't forget the pics so we can enjoy your truck as well..

.................HP.................

I am in Houston too. Had my diesel for about 7 months. Love it. Buy fresh fuel. Go to the station you see big trucks at. Stay away from the little store tuck away in a neighborhood. I have had good luck with Wally world fuel. Let the dealer do your first oil change if the will do it for free. Otherwise, find a brand of oil you like and do it yourself.
Always search for the problem before posting.

Those two covered it well. I had a checklist of items to look over when purchasing a new Super-Duty. If it's still on my home PC, I'll post it for you if you'd like.

There's also a PSD break in procedure in the Tech 'sticky' at the top of the 6.0 forum, here's a link:

Got mine in July 05, PSD F250 SB CC Latiat Auto. You will love the torque. Use a good fuel additive religiously. I have used DK since she turned 1200 miles. I also varied the RPM's until 1200. You will find your own sweet spot, most are around 2000 rpm. I get 20 MPG at that speed, still "have" to goose it occationally.

My second diesel, first was an old MBZ 240D. All of 63 HP if I remember. Heck, that was over 20 years ago.

Congrats and welcome to FTE. My advise, if you let your buddies know you have it coming, be prepared to drive them everywhere. When going to lunch they will all get in your CrewCab. When I was in Oklahoma one of our favorite pastimes was loading up in the CrewCab and going to Los Tacos, it was carryout only. We would get great Mexican food, park next door at the Sonic where we would get a soda so we could see the girls skate in and out and eat our Mexican. Then we would drive back to work, with the windows down of course. Guess this is one way to break in a PSD.

Here is some words of wisdom stolen from another poster:

#1. If you can do your own maintenance, then do it yourself. You can get your oil, filters and such anywhere but the dealer, unless you have a bottomless wallet.

#2. Most of us recommend a good diesel fuel additive, one for winter, one for summer, just find one you like and use it.

#3. Keep an eye on your oil level for fuel dilution, it's not really too common, but best to know before something bad happens(been there, done that). You can have a lab check it,and get all sorts of information on your engine condition.

#4. Check all the hoses periodically, especially the turbo hoses to make sure they are tight, and look for any radiator fluid blowing out if you are towing.

#5. Remember, it's the GREEN hose at the fuel pump, if it says 87, 89, 91 or such, it's not diesel.

#6. Don't let anyone else put fuel in your truck, they probably think diesel is the same as gas.

#7. Be sure and smile when you pass the other guys, especially if they're causing traffic jams trying to get up the hill.

#8. Don't tell the state cop you were only 1/4 throttle when he clocked you at 85, he probably drives something else, and he won't be humored.

#9. Remind the wife that you really do need this much truck so you can get home faster and spend more time with her.

#10. Spend lots of time on FTE telling everyone how much you love you new ride.

Chris

Good luck...I've added Stanadyne with every tank of fuel. Others will recommend other good additives especially it you don't drive it every day. '04 never a problem but the 2 recalls. When you change oil keep it right between full and low...Mine likes 13 qts. When you get it and the engine is dead cold, look at the coolant level. Don't let it be too high. I took 2 quarts out when I got home and have 2 additional qts when it came back one 1 of the recall fixes. Mine's never puked any out. Have fun and grin a lot.....

11. Watch out at BP/Amoco stations. Some of them have ALL of the dispenser nozzles colored green!
