I have 9000 miles on my 04 6.0L. The first turbow was repalced at 6700 miles because of sticking vanes. It is now sticking again. Is there any fix for this problem.
I had an 03 the vanes were sticking, had to replace turbo out of pocket, because of my modifications, ford refused to warranty. I had 4" intake, edge, 4 inch exhaust, and quadzilla speed delimiter. When it was in the shop the for rep took my truck for a test drive and once it went over 99mph he said the warranty was voided because of the delimiter causing the engine to go beyond factory settings. Anyhow, I paid $1600 for a new turbo. My symptoms were: after full throttle acceleration and release, the next time I accelerated it was a dead pedal the vanes would stay open and I would have no boost. It would resolve after a stop sometimes, or I would have to shut the truck down and start it up again. I would also notice a deeper tone and no turbo whistle. Then it would kick in and whistle again. The tech showed me the turbo after he split it open and there was alot of black soot that was causing them to stick. I traded it in for the 2005 I have now. I occasionally have the same problem but only with the programmer I have. I think it is overboosting causing it to stick. I am running stock now without any problems. I also feel that the tuners make it smoke more which contributes to the build up that can make the vanes stick.
Well I won’t chastise you on leaving a programmer in the truck for a dealer visit, I think you found out the hard way.
The VGTCV is a duty cycle controlled valve that directs oil flow to the piston that controls the vanes in the turbo charger…I would look at this first. Black soot in a turbo…. Never would of thought that…. All turbo chargers have black soot, might be your technician got one by you. Not trying to diagnose your problem that happened, just trying to give you an idea this may not be the case.
I took the edge out, I just forgot to take the delimiter out. As far as, turbo diesels my 03 was my first diesel. All of my knowledge about diesels comes from what I read and what little experience I have had with them. Regarding the black soot, it was the same type of build up that plugs up EGR valves, from what he showed me it caused some of the vanes to not close or open completely which was evident by the markings by the vanes. And again that was just what I was told.
Never idled for long periods of time, but they also replaced my EGR valve and EBP sensor on my 03. They also reflashed it which helped with the unsteady idle, all under warranty. This was all before I brought it in for turbo issues.
I also wondered if you used any kind of fuel additive like powerservice or stanadyne. Seems to help with mileage and performance and I've never had anything but reflashing issues and those only in the early days. Of course, I keep mine "blown out" regularly and it's mostly highway mileage.

Good... there's no reason to chastise him because he knew that by adding those mods, he would have to take the responsibilty for any damage they may cause. He knew that removing all of the mods and trying to get Ford to warranty the repairs would be dishonest and thievery.

Really getting on the soapbox with this subject, aren't you Mike?

Exactly....I was hoping to not have to remove my turner. No hardware fixes or aftermarket fix?
