modified turn signal switch

Here's one for all of you auto electric gurus. I took the turn signal switch out of my '65 parts truck and deleated the horn and other wires that are not needed to use it in my '40 1/2 ton. I made a stiffening/mounting bracket which attaches to the left of the steering column under the dash. I shortened the lever and threaded it so it looks clean. The mechanism was a little stiff so I filed and tweeked the plastic until it clicked into the detents nice and smooth. It's all wired up and works great. Now I need to splice in the brake circuit and am having a little trouble envisioning where to make the connection. It seems to me that attaching the brake hot wire after the turn signal switch or before the T/S switch would have the same effect. It seems to me that the brakes would over ride the T/S. How did Henry do it? Steve

I couldn't find my 65 wiring diagram, but found a 64, which should be similar..it shows the brakelight wire(black and red) from the brake light switch going to the turn signal switch.if someone doesn't come along with more info I will look again for my 65 diagram, hope this helps

If it is anything like my 63, the brake lights and the turn signals share bulbs and the turn signal not being used is a brake light. You would have to wire the brake lights through the switch to get that to happen.

Your posts have me thinking that I might have disabled too many wires from the T/S switch. I will experiment tonight if I don't get frozen out of my shop and will post the results in a day or so. Thanks. Steve

if you can list what color wires you have coming from the turnsignal switch, I can possibly let you know where they should go

According to my '66 wiring diagram, it appears the brake switch hot wire is a red/black stripe wire that runs to the main steering column harness and up onto the T/S wiring block. At the T/S wiring block it has a connection to both turn signal wires: the yellow/black stripe wire and the green wire which form/go out to the small column harness (2 wire coupler) which then routes thru one of the main firewall disconnects to join with 1 other wire (brown which appears to be the running light wire) which comprise the brake/turn signal/running light (3-wire) harness which runs to the back lights of the truck.

So, it looks like the brake light circuit is combined at/with the T/S circuit wires and then run to the rear lights. (Note the the other wire on the brake circuit goes to the turn signal flasher so that the appropriate brake/turn signal light flashes if the brake pedal is depressed while also engaging the turn signals).

Hope this helps,
dagger

DaggerNC, your description of the wiring harness corroborates my visual inspection of the inside of the T/S switch. It appears to me that when the turn signals are not being used, the brake circuit is in the "hot" position but when a turn signal direction is selected, the T/S circuit over rides the brake circuit on that side. That is why there are two stiff contact wires and four contacts inside of the switch. Unfortunately, I did not know this when I "simplified" the switch. All is not lost, though. My turn signals work great and I have determined that a couple of small but effective marker lights will work as T/S lights. I will return my existing tail/stop lights to their original purpose. Thank you everyone for your research and input, Steve
