Ever since I got my truck, all the breaks do is squeak. I've had the rotors turned a few times and had my brake pads replaced, but they squeak terribly at any stopping speed. I'm very careful to stop slowly to prevent this, but it never helps. I kind of wonder if I need to have my rotors replaced... is this a possible problem? Being that I'm the second owner, I don't have any idea about the history of the vehicle, rotors, or brakes. I drive a 94 single cab F-150, by the way.
Possibly but I would doubt it if you have had the rotors turned. To eliminate annoying squeaking I have gone to a ceramic blend pad, they cost a little more and wear a little faster, but no squeak and reduced brake dust on the wheels.
What you are most likely hearing, is the back of the pad rubbing against the caliper. Unless you do the brakes yourself, its kind of hard to imagine. When I do the brakes, I clean all the rust from the caliper/spindle grooves and use a moly grease on the pins. Also putting the grease on the back of the pad will stop and/or reduce the squealing. Could also be a shim on the back of the pad has slipped.
I don't usually do the brakes myself, but I have done them before, so I have an idea as to what you guys mean. Thanks for the info, by the way. I'll try getting my rotors tuned and see what that does.
