I only have 31K miles on my 04 F150 Supercab and the brakes are squeaking. The dealership says my rotors need to be turned, but some other brake places (Midas and Just Brakes) say they need to be replaced and that many people have had issues with the softer brake rotors on the new body style. Have ya'll heard of similar problems? Any suggestions?
You can pretty much tell if they need turned, they'll look glazed. That's probably what is going on and why the dealership says they need turned. About the only time you need to turn rotors are when they're glazed or warped. I'd have the rotors turned and go with a quality aftermarket pad. I've heard of this "soft" rotor situation on lots of makes but nothing definate.
If the rotors are glazed the pads will be too. Do them both. Good luck.
The soft steel rotors generally will warp if you have a problem. If your brakes are not pulsating, I would not replace them. Some shops will want to machine them, some won't. The only way to tell if they can be machined or need to be replaced is if they are measured with a micrometer. No one can tell you over the phone if they need to be replaced or not.
In other words, be VERY skeptical of any brake shop that tells you you'll need new rotors without even looking at the vehicle. They are ripping you off. This is why you should stay away from chains like Just Brakes and Midas, and even the dealership.
Find a reputable, locally run brake shop that stands behind their work. Same goes for any automotive repair shop.
