noisy lifters, fix

The lifters on my 2.8 are annoying. The truck runs great and I've heard this is a common problem, but what can I do to get rid of this. Can I buy new aftermarket lifters or replace the heads completely? School me
Ex

Will Mystery Oil "fix" this?

diesel oil will be fine if not better than your current oil. diesel oil carries ratings for use in gas engines. they are labled SL/CI-4+

Adjust your valves. You will reduce the noise and also you will be able to replace the valve cover gaskets that are so famous for leaking on the 2.8 engines. The 2.8 has solid lifters so it sounds like your valves are out of adjustment.

I have a similar problem on my '87 2.9, and it's really noisy on first start-up, ESPECIALLY on colder mornings. I believe the 2.9 has hydraulic lifters though? Any advice for me, other than the oil? I need to replace the valve cover and oil pan gaskets anyhow... so I may have a look-see and check my specs chart(s) and see if anything is out-of-place/adjustment.

A common cause on the 2.9 is a clogged pump screen.

or install a dipstick oil heater. the warm oil will get up there faster!

So I've heard. I'll probably remove the oil pump pickup tube / screen and soak it in solvent and clean it up really good when I change out the oil pan gasket, as well as check out the valvetrain when I replace the valve cover gaskets.

Wouldn't surprise me much if the (my) 2.9 has the common Ford hydraulic lifter problem. I had an '86 Ranger 2.0L that had 5 of 8 lifters seized and 3 of the 5 were seized into the head and required a 10-lb slide hammer tool to effect removal. My other favorite valvetrain was a 351C-2V that had been rebuilt and put in a '67 F-100 I had bought when I was 18. Thanks for the tip(s).

try 1/2-3/4 liter of tranny fluid in the engine a week before you change your oil. It have worked on several engines for me like a miracle

Try adjusting them first but I ended up putting new lifters and an oil pump in my 2.9. No more tick!

Did you adjust them yet, that's all you should have to do.

Can you convert a 2.8 to hydraulic? If you can it seems like a lot of money and work compaired to just adjusting them.
