Timing Belt
I am looking at a 1993 or 94 Ranger with a 4 cylinder. The truck will need a new timing belt. It still runs but it is an old belt and I wanted to know if there is any danger of causing severe head damage if it breaks? The guy that has it told me it was a 2.5l engine but it didn't come out until 1998 so I don't know if it's got the original engine or not. It has 250,000 miles and he thinks it's all original. He doesn't know much about vehicles so it may still be the 2.3.

I'm not sure of the vin but I can tell you it has always been a 4cyl truck if that's what you were wondering. I really think it's a 2.3 because the old man that bought it new took incredible care of it so I doubt it ever needed a new engine.

2.3/2.5L SOHC engines are non-interference. The engine will just stop running if the timing belt breaks, but no engine damage will result. FWIW, when Ford switched to the round tooth timing belt they no longer listed a replacement interval for the timing belt. I've read elsewhere that the round tooth belts are good to 150k, square tooth ones 100k.
If he's the only person to ever own the truck and has never swapped the motor then you've got a 2.3L.
