I'm trying to swap a t-5 tranny from a 1987 5 litre mustang into my dad's 1977 F-150 two wheel drive. The truck has a 300 6 cylinder. After removing the three speed tranny, I found that the flywheel was to large for the t5 bellhousing. Are there any flywheels that are smaller in diameter that will work. If not are there any bellhousing that would work. This truck is used primarily to drive up and down the interstate and dad wants a manual transmission with overdrive. thanks
are you sure, the bell housing with bolt up to the 300 6? what happened to the original flywheel off the 5.0? that's pretty sweet puttin a t-5 into a truck, keep postin to say how it goes, i'd like to hear about it.
the bell housing on the 300 is to short, causing the input shaft to stick out to far, also the center hole in the bell housing is too small, by a 1/16 of an inch. I've thought about trying to make an adaptor plate to fit on the 300 bellhousing that would make up this difference and would have a larger center hole. I've been searching all over the place to see if anyone makes one of these. I found that someone makes an adaptor plate for a 3.03 which allows the t5 to bolt up, but i'm not sure if it will fit the 300 bellhousing:-X12
T-5's are weak tranny's... Mine is on the fritz in my Mustang, all the synchros are gone and the torque from the 302 (which the 300 has more of) doesn't help it any!!
Yea, I know it's weak, but I had it laying around the garage and do not plan to be hard on it, just need it for the extra gears. There's to big of a jump between 3rd and 2nd when you downshift
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Dec-01 AT 08:27 PM (EST)]When I trashed the junkyard 302 in my wife's '81 F100 stepside. I decided to put a rebuilt (.030 over) 351W/T-5 in it.
My wife loves it. We can cruise at 75mph while turning about 1800 rpm (rear gears are a little tall). I'm looking for a little lower third member to relieve some of the load on the 10" clutch.
I'd like to tell you that I figured it out all by myself, but I can't. Go to fordmuscle.com/archives and "arrow" down to T5 conversion. You'll find a great article about putting the T-5 behind a 351W. Much of the info there will help you.
The flywheel bolt pattern (and crankshaft/flywheel balance) is different between the 302, 351W, and your 6 cylinder.
I did all the mods suggested by the article, and it works just great.
I did use the smaller 302 flywheel/T-5 bellhousing. It cost about $100 to balance the 10" 302 flywheel to my 351W. I believe you can use a 10 1/5" flywheel with the T-5 bellhousing, but I didn't have one.
I also had to fabricate a shifter; my wife wanted to keep the bench seat and the T-5 shifter stub comes up under the seat. The "new" shifter extends from the T-5 stub forward some 12" and then up about 14'" (for the shift ****). It feels just as smooth as the
original T-5 shifter.
Just drove the truck with the T-5 in it--It was great--I used an adapter plate the is used to put a T-5 behind 1960 model Mustangs with a three speed transmission. The plate costs around $150.00 and was the only modification needed. I used the original transmission mount, cross member and did not have to change the length of the driveshaft. The only think I had to do was use the second set of mounting holes int he frame for the transmission crossmember. The shifter came through the floor in front of the seat (Only problem is that you know have to have the seat all the way back--That's great for us, but if your short, you will have to modify your shifter). If anyone has any questions fell free to email me.
