V10 dies
I have a motohome on a Ford chassis with a V10. Twice in the last 2 months after I have started the engine, it runs for about 30-45 seconds and shuts down. It's like turning the ignition switch off. But when this has happened I have no headlights, all gauges on the dash are dead etc. It's a total power loss. If I let it set for about 10-15 minutes everything comes back and it starts and runs fine. The first time it happened I got under the hood and looked for loose connections and tight battery connections and nothing jumped out at me. The second time I just sat and waited with the ignition switch on. Both times after the 10-15 minutes everything came back and away I went. I have a switch on the dash that allows me to parallel the coach batteries with the chassis batteries and that doesn't give me power either. Anybody seen this type of thing? I'm going to take it to a dealer because of warranty but I'd like to have a warm fuzzy feeling that they do the right thing and not just shotgun the thing.
Thanks
Electrical problems are always the worst things to have to diagnose IMO. From the sound of your problem, I'd be suspicious of the PCM. But, you just never know.
Please post the results of your dealer's diagnosis. Just remember that, even if they shotgun it, the only important thing is that it gets fixed.
I had this happen on my V-10, F-350. After about three days at the Ford House and several rounds on the computer. They eventually replaced the PCM. I've been nearly 2500 miles since and haven't had the same problem again.
The PCM they replaced was only three weeks old because another Ford house fried the original. The only explanation they could give me was that the replacement PCM was defective.
