Hi folks, I just picked up a demo '05 Ford F150 Lariat 4x4 SuperCrew. It has 3330 miles on it and I think the Sales Mgr who drove it smoked 1000% more in the demo than he claimed. . .which was none. Febreeze seems to keep the smell camoflaged but what can I do? Thanks y'all.
OUCH!!! First off, I am a smoker, but haven't smoked any either my or my wife's vehicles for quite a long time (smoked in my 93 Ranger Splash - and swore never to do it any vehicle again). The only guess I have is to use a carpet cleaning type machine (wet) on all fabrics, and then dowse with Fabreeze. I absolutely HATE that smell in a car or truck, and like I said...I smoke.
The only good thing is, after you clean the seats all up, you can scotchguard them to help prevent stains (which are way too easy to get on the F150 seats).

Try the ion air freshners that you plug into the aux power point. Keep the vehicle closed up and leave the ion cleaner plugged in.They work pretty well. You can buy them at any auto supply store $10-20.
Try NO-BUTTS air freshener smoke destroyer from Mandate I bought a car that the people smoked in for years you just spray all the fabric in it, It works great Also welcome to FTE
One of the best things you can do is clean everything, especially the headliner and sun visors. Try to find a professional detail supply house for a good upholstery cleaner or if you cannot, put a little Tide and ammonia in a bucket of water. Take a clean wash cloth or similar and get a small portion of the headliner barely wet. You figure out how wet when you are no longer getting a bath an the headliner is damp. Scrub lightly with a damp soft bristle brush and pat dry with a clean towel. Then go on to another section until the headliner is done. You may or may not get any color change (residue) on the towel. The same solution can be used on the carpets only they need to fairly wet, scrubbed hard and then gone over with a good wet-dry vac. Wipe down all the plastic with the same solution or Windex and do the windows carefully to get the edges and corners. Last go over the seats and steering wheel with a good leather cleaner and conditioner. Hopefully you can find a warm weekend when you can let the truck sit wide open to allow it to dry and air out fully.
Return truck to selling dealer on a weekly basis, collecting free air freshener from lying sack of you-know-what Sales Mangler. Another example of why I tell people that I sell drugs while collecting welfare, rather than admit my REAL profession....
Thouroughly wash down any hard surfaces, plastics, metal, windows.Make some effort to get whatever you can in the vents, under dash, everything. There's really no short cuts.
Get a GOOD carpet cleaner YOU KNOW with a truckmount unit to clean carpets, upholstery, seat belts, etc.,any material-More thorough better results.
If you don't know a good cleaner, get a referal from a supplier, otherwise you risk some jerk swamping you vehicle.
When all is dry I would even go a bit further and toss in an ozone machine for a day or two-restoration companies have these, maybe even tool rental places, your carpet cleaner may have one,get some advise on that.
How far you go with this depends how smoky it is in there.
If the smoke really bothers you Febreeze won't cut it.
I personally hate air fresheners, they get sickening in time
I happened to have some Febreze and I sprayed the head liner and all carpeted areas yesterday morning. It did help some. Now I have the febreze odor. . . yuck!!
Y'all please keep posting ideas. I'm definitely going to have to follow-up the treatment with something else as soon as I have time. Also, these ideas from you guys may help someone in the future.
An upholstery shampooer (home models like the Hoover carpet cleaner with the upholstery attachment work great), soap and water and then throughly clean the headliner, carpet, and cloth seats. Scrub any dirty ashtrays clean as well as the area around it (ashtray out). Wipe vinal surfaces with a mild cleaner and rinse well. Dry these surfaces. Basically a real good interior cleaning is in order. And even at that, it may still take time to air it out. If you have a garage, park in there at night and leave the windows down. Avoid the magic trees as they will replace the smoke oder with a new one, one that lingers for ever. I sold a car of mine this spring that I had used magic tree air freshenrs in from 1989 to 1992. It still stunk like magic tree 13 years and untold shampooings later.
*If you got a really sweet deal, why not just flip a $100 bill at a detail shop and have it over with. Or ask the dealer to put you in touch with the detailer they use and try for a better price.
