Question Stupid Question

Long story short...

Bought a truck that supposedly has a bad tranny, 91 ext cab 4x4 f150 5.0 E4od. Trailered it home and just got a chance to mess with it today. I started it up and wanted to see what the tranny was doing, and it seems more like a rear axle problem. I put it on stands and the tranny shifted out fine, under no load of course. Under a load it seems like something in the rear is slipping, so i jacked it back up and put in neutral and spun the tire by hand and both turn the same way(LS). I put it in park to see how much slack may be in the rear when i rocked the tire and with a little effort i can spin the tire in park. The other tire goes the opposite way now. Is this normal? The driveshaft doesnt turn but the tires do in PARK. Popped the cover off, fluid looks ok, but looks like the spider gears are moving more than they should when i just rock the tires. Never seen this before, so i just wanted some insight as to what may be the problem. Thanks in advance. Also wanted to add that when put the truck in gear it seems to go in fine and when i give it gas it goes fine for maybe a couple feet, and then that is when it pops like its just going in gear.

when you had the trans in drive.. and the engine running ...did the drive shaft turn? the actions of the rear end as you describe them are normal, my 2c's,bob

What that means is that the truck was originally equipped with a limited slip axle and the clutches have worn out. They both spun the same way because there's just enough material left to simulate a limited slip, but when you put any force on it (the tranny in park) it just gives up.

I didnt think they would turn at all, that's why i asked. I am getting another carrier from my buddy and i will get it in this weekend and see what happens. If the posi is worn out, would that cause alot of vertical movement in the spider gears? Thanks for replying man.

No, it wouldn't cause that. If there is slop in the gears, then the whole thing may be due for a rebuild.

You said you're replacing the carrier? Why? You do realize you will have to set up the gears again, which isn't something that should be attempted by someone who hasn't done the job before...

If the shaft spins when they're in the air, and not when it's on the ground, the problem isn't in the rear axle, it's in the transmission.

With the tranny in Drive, in the air, why wouldnt the shaft spin? I am confused. It turns when i give it throttle on the ground like it should, then it slips like a 1/4 turn or better, then grabs real hard.

Did they make a LS 3.08 rear in the early 90's?
