How much should i expect for a new engine for a 68 f100, 360cid, 2wd. It has 188,000. Its all rusted. Where should i look for this. I guess i would just get another 360, or if any of you have any other better suggestions. Thanks.
Totoal with core charge is just under $1000. I considered eating the core at that price to get a 390 to replace my 360. I expect to get my motor from them around mid febuary, so if you don't yet have one ill let you know what luck i have. For me in KS I'll drive to pick up and save shipping costs (they are in OK city)
i don't know how much exactly, but i do know they are a little higher, BUT the convenience of dealing with someone local if you have a warranty issue, pluss not having to roadtrip to get it would be an individual concern. They are reputable companies and that always has value
Is your motor currently a 360? You could use the same block. 360/390 are interchangable. To get to 390, you'd need the 390 pistons and crank. And 4V intake..
whatever you do, don't go to advance. they enjoy selling low quality parts. I should know. I work at Carquest. Carquest is a better store, and they let you have a choice to buy the good stuff or cheaper stuff. carquest doesn't sell engines, but if you need to order something, they're the place to go. I'm only a delivery boy, but I think they take like 30% off the top of most everythings list price.
What about labor cost, cus i cant do it myself im only 17 without the right tools. I have a 360 but should i put another 360 in it, I mean thats what seems to be the best thing to do to me. Oh yea when i replace the engine what do I have to worry about regarding the Transmission. Thanks.
A 390 is basically a 360 with a longer stroke. The blocks are identical so it will bolt right in. The transmission will bolt right up. And I think you could install it yourself. Go to the online store here and get a copy of How to rebuild your Big Block Ford by Steve Christ. Installing an engine isn't that hard, just take your time.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jan-02 AT 08:15 PM (EST)]I wish i could do it myself and i want to but i have no tools to do it. I mean how am i supposed to get the thing out. So how much would labor run? dThanks
Yes the 360 and 390 are the same block, but if you want to get a rebuilt motor they will want like motor for the core. If you don't mind losing the money on the core then you can just eat the core charge, or buy a junk motor to exchange. Either way to convert your 360 to a 390, you will need a 390 for parts. So why not buy a remanufactured engine, get a warranty, take your time and learn while doing the install????. I also worked for Carquest, we got remanufactured engines from 4 star, ATK, and Gopher, some of the same companies used by all the part stores regardless of company (o'reilleys autozone advanced etc...) just ask who rebuilt the engine and check out what experinces other people have had.

Chris, There are places that will sell you the engine and change it out as well. I think one in my area is called Engine Exchange, another is Jasper Engines.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
Give your local auto parts store a call, (but not the chain stores:JUNK!). They can probably tell you a garage in your area that sells and installs engines. We had to replace the engine in my wifes '92 Mercury Topaz, and the mecahanic forgot to tighten the lower radiator clamp. The antifreeze leaked out while she was driving the next day, we refilled it and took it in to make sure nothing else had been overlooked. They didn't charge us for labor, reimbursed us for the antifreeze we had to buy, and the shop owner gave us coupons for 3 free oil changes. We take our vehicles there now when we need "professional" service. And we were referred to this shop through an auto parts store. They know who's good and who stinks.
