my buddy has an 89? f150, when he started it up i thought it was a 302 or something like a small v8, i thought he did a swap. he popped the hood and i saw "FORD 4.9". it is a very interesting sound. do you think this is a split manifold? he has two pipes that look like they are perfecly straight all the way back. all i know is my truck has to sound like this thing.
In a way, you have split exhaust manifolds, try and picture this.
Older exhaust manifolds have/had one outlet on the inline six engines. Or 6 ports to one outlet.
What split manifolds refers too, is they would create a dual outlet exhaust manifold using the stock single outlets. this would get your TWO 3 ports to one outlet or dual 3 to one manifolds. I believe this started out because headers were not available and/or there were some, that felt the cast iron was stronger than the steel used on the headers.
Your ford efi 300, already has TWO exhaust manifolds or split three to one, resulting in dual outlet.
They also like to use smittys / glasspacks on the inline engines way back when...
So if you want your truck to sound like your buddies, you simply need to ask what has been done. Questions like, are you using the stock exhaust manifolds or headers, are the catalytic converters intact or removed, what muffler did you use, how many mufflers, look and see where the pipes exit, also find out pipe diameter.
Good luck

well i have good and bad news, i can get a split manifold sooner than expected. i scanned my truck today and found out there is blockage in the catlytic converters. i think the exhaust shop will cut the cats off if they are bad anyway, because we have emissions in indiana.
Just read alot of the old posts on exhaust setups and experiences...
You go putting duals on the 300, depending on the muffler(s)/ exhaust set up, you'll think your driving a honda civic with a "performance" muffler, every time you accelerate, seriously.
