I have a 2000 Excursion, with about 80k miles. Last week it started shuddering in 3rd and 4th gear below 2k rpms and the exhaust smells like it is running lean, but it hasn't thrown any codes yet. I've changed the tranny fluid, but it looked just fine, and there wasn't any metal in the pan or on the magnet. So, does anybody have any idea what this might be? I would think that if it was running that lean it would throw a code. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.
Have you chk your coolant bottle, make sure your not losing coolant (head gasket)
What color is the tailpipe? Antifreeze burning gives a different smell
Never been able to smell a lean condition in all my yrs.
Have you changed your plugs yet? I'll bet the plug holes are full of moisture.
things to think about
and add spark plugs and the PCV assembly. Even the platinum plugs in the SuperDuty start to lose their gap (the gap widens) after about 60k miles. The PCV check is called for every 60k miles/48 months and the typical problem is a rotted rubber hose causing a vacuum leak which leads to a lean condition.
