I need some advice again and am hoping everyone will be patient with me on this.. LOL I bought this 89 B2 about a month ago, it was running like crap when I got it. It would drive fine when you are going over 45 mph. but between 0 and 45 it would bog down real bad. Since I've had it we have replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, distributor and module. Yesterday I took it out for a drive and it just shut off after about 10 minutes of driving. it ran just long enough so I had to have it towed back home. It wouldn't start for about an hour and a half after that. Then ran fine for a while again. We replaced the ignition coil last night. But I haven't tried to take it out again since it's below 30 degrees right now and it's pretty icy. So my question is this: Is there anything else that could possibly be causeing the shutting off problem? Once the distributor was replaced the bogging has stopped but now it just shuts off.
I just pulled the codes and it's saying the ISC (Idle Speed Control motor or Air Bypass not controlling idle properly (generally idle too low) and the engine coolant temp sensor is outta range, the last one was No or low (under 7.5 V) Key Power to PCM pin 5? So I'm assuming that I need to adjust the idle, but what's the coolant temp sensor about? and Where is the PCM located? I NEED this thing running by Monday.. If anyone can help.. Thanx
For the IAC...start it up and pull the connector, the engine should stall or a drop in the rpms. You can not adjust the idle speed, it is controled by the PCM, don't mess with the screw.
For the ECT, was the truck up to normal temp when you pulled the codes?
The bronco broke down again today. I was about 2 miles away from my house and it just shut off. It wouldn't restart so I had to call another tow truck. This also happened on Thursday. It took the tow truck 3 hours to get to where I was, ( totally screwed up day) and then I drove it up onto the flatbed. I got it home and let it run for a while. then pulled the codes. After that, I pulled the distributor and had the module tested ( I bought both 5 days ago). The module is bad. I have to return both the distributor and the module on Monday when the warehouse is open. As for the rest of the codes, I'm not sure what to think about them. I don't have a multi meter so I pulled the codes using the check engine light. the last code was 5 fast flashes then a 1 second pause then 5 fast flashes. I took that to be 55.. right? I may be doing this wrong, but I don't have any other way to pull the codes at this time.
55 is not a valid code for you vehicle. I would wait until you get the module replaced before doing anything else. I would clear all the codes once it's done so your starting with current information.
in addition definatly check your egr vavle sounds like its stuck fully open the egr vavle opens at criusing rpms to allow for best mpg if it gets stuck open it would be dumping exuast gas in the intake and would definalty reduce engine proformance and cuase a huge lack of power under criusing speeds im sure also you may have a vacum problem too because i think the egr vavle is vacum operated, best of luck fixing you truck
also quick tip faster way to clean codes and reset the check engine light is turn off the ignition disconnect the battery and hit he break 4 times then hold for 10 seconds the fifth time worked on my moms jeep and worked for my friends accord so that technique is pretty universial
Thank you to everyone for all of your help and suggestions. This is what has been done since my last post. I replaced the distributor and module for the 3rd time at about 9pm on Monday. We timed it and I took it for a test drive. For those of you who know the Dallas area, It had to get me from Garland to Allen every day for work. it's approx. 20 miles one way. It drove great. It was a bit sluggish but it had been a city driver ( a 3 mile radius) for years before I got it. I've been driving it back and forth to work since Tuesday. I've been told that some of my problem is I need to get all the carbon buildup out of there.. so I've been driving a lot on the highway to and from work. Every day it runs better and better. The only other thing I've done since then is replace the two back tires with 30's. Next week I'll get two more. I've also been told that I can't run my four wheel drive until I get the other two tires. All of the info on the bronco that I get is from here and my father (who has been a mechanic for longer than I've been alive). So I basically shoot ideas off of you guys and my dad. I don't know much about the 4x4 so I'm taking his word for it. we are supposed to get some snow on Monday.. so let's just hope everything turns out okay. The only other problem I have is installing the radio. It's giving me problems.
