Dead Cylinder?????

Im running an 89 7.3 with ATS turbo wastegated. It seems ever since i got the turbo installed (about 3 months ago) i have had this phhtphhtphht sound out of the exhaust, it sounds like the classic dead cylinder noise, but if i put my hand over the exhaust it doesnt suck in like a dead cylinder usually does. The truck has a rough idle that clears up at 2-2500 rpms, i have cracked the injectors, they all sound the same, and the truck still runs rough when the injectors are cracked. At a stop light i have a distinct rough shake when im stopped. The truck runs great and starts great other then the rough idle, and exhaust noise. What do you guys think i should look into on this one, maybe i need to have the valves looked at and maybe adjusted, or should i go deeper? Or does it just sound like i have a huge exhaust leak at the housing to downpipe connection, or whatever. Please help i really apreciate it and love the site, as well as my truck.

Thank You

Mike Howard

The valves are not adjustable, but it could be a rocker problem.
I would be more inclined to have the injectors pop tested first.
I just did mine, and found two were leaking fuel and two more were not spraying but were squirting streams of fuel.
When they were rebuilt I had them set to 94 turbo specs.
These are installed in an 87 6.9 which runs great.
The IP I am using is off a 94 turbo motor as well.
The injector rebuild was 287 dollars at a local diesel injection shop, this included new crush washers and O rings for the return caps.

The injectors were out of my reman 7.3 turbo motor that only had 17,000 miles on it since it was rebuilt.
Now I am thinking very hard about getting the IP rebuilt since it was on the same motor. Everything about that motor seems to have been junk. The IP and turbo are all that I have not rebuilt that was on it.

Do you see any indication of an exhaust leak on one cylinder at the exhaust manifold to head connection?

How many miles on the engine?

Dead Cylinder????

I havent noticed any kind of soot buildup around the manifolds, y pipe or downpipe. The motor has about 52,000 miles on it, the people i bought it from replaced it due to hard starting of the old motor, they werent diesel mechanics. But i dont think anything except the block, pistons, crank, cam and heads were rebuilt, so i dont know about the IP or injectors. But there is not a noticable difference from one injector to the next when i loosen them, they all make the motor run as rough as the next. Please tell me this is injector related, i dont want to tear this motor down.
