I just got a 1992 E350 with an auto trans. I found that it shifted "too early" in general, and really early into OD, to the point that it would labour the motor. I checked the fluid and found that while cold, the fluid level was at the hot level. Could over-full trans fluid cause this?
Over full could induce foaming and MAY cause any number of operation problems. I would check and reset the FIPL to ensure it is within parameters and serviceable.
