thanks guys-i removed the broken collar .fyi--- before you can remove the old collar you have to pull the wires up through the colum. the wires have to be removed from the female plug end. in order to make sure i get them plugged in again right---i took a picture of the proper sequence. i also tied a string to help guide the wires back. cruzinbobby
I would be interested to know how you got the plug through a hole that is smaller and all the way up the tube on removal then back into the tube. I am guessing yours is a 78 or 79 column. The only way to do it on a 77 and down is to pull take a small screwdriver and gently move the keepers out of the way and pull the pins and wire out of the connecter. Unless of course you did not put the wires back into the tube or they weren't before.
Okay, I've got the wires back thru and the shift collar installed onto the tube, but it looks like I may have another broken (small) part on the underside of the turn signal collar.
Can anyone point me to a schematic of a 1977 steering column?
I would like to double check these smaller, underside (of turn signal collar) parts before I put everything back together and to double check on the re-assembly because it doesn't seem like I'm able to push the shift collar down far enough to the wear point of the previous shift collar. Both the shift collar and turn signal collar want to "spring" out of their depressed position.
When installing those 3 hold down clamps on the underside of the collar..... one has to hold down on it against the springs to get the allen headed screws started.
OK, I can not get my truck to start or anything. I'm guessing it has something to do with the neutral safty switch. I turned it off in drive when I broke the collar, and since then I haven't been able to start it since. Advise on this subject would be really appreciated(also on a 77 where is the switch suposed to be inside the collum or just on it?
The easiest way to tell if it is the switch is to hold the key in the start position, then move the gear select from park to D. If you hear the starter start to engage, then the neutral switch needs to be adjusted. On my 76 the switch is located at the bottom of the column, inside the passenger compartment. Do a search on neutral safety switch in this foum. Million has posted the adjustment procedure.
