I'm confused. What is a BAP sensor? Where is it located?
I have a 91 too and it has an MAF just like my 94 right there on the air cleaner outlet tube.
Don't forget to check your oil as I mentioned in a previous post. Your situation may not have been as extreme as mine but all that un-combusted fuel has to go somewhere.
BAP=Barometric Absolute Pressure sensor. It seems to usually be attached to the firewall (see Savagefan's other recent "what is it" thread). It is similar (if not identical) to the MAP sensors used on speed density systems (like the 2.9L engine), only it's not connected to engine vacuum. It is left open to the air and measures local barometric absolute pressure. Obviously, it gives the computer information about the current barometric pressure. I'm not sure what the computer does with this information.
Savagefan didn't say, but I expect he had a trouble code that pointed him to this problem. I expect the BAP sensor would have to be way out of range to cause a no start.
You are correct mrshorty, and I didn't expect it to be a factor in a no spark but there it is. Runs fine now but I get a CEL after 20 mins. driving Service code 89 tcc override circuit. Soft codes 41 ego too lean and 66 maf voltage too low. will check em after the turkey. Just a winter beater but fun to play with, Merry christmas all.
Yeah, it is pretty cold up here. I think I'll go somewhere warm for a little holiday. Maybe Green Bay, Minnesota, Bismark or Billings. I hear Detroit and Chicago are balmy this time of year too!
Back to the BAP. Are you fellas saying that the 91 had a BAP and an MAF? I know for sure there is an MAF on my 91 but would have to look for a BAP. What OBD-I trouble code number points to a BAP fault?
You also indicate that they have changed over the years. Would a replacement MAF for a 94 have to come off a 94 to be compatible? (I'm talking fed cars only)
This is getting into rough waters. I saw on the autozone website that the 91 had a MAF for california only and the MAP for all cars. So maybe Canada got California emissions cars? Go to fordfuelinjection.com and see what they look like. It says there that in 1994 Ford figured out how to calculate air density with just the MAF which eliminated the need for a MAP to adjust for altitude. My 1993 howerver, has no MAP. Most likely, Ford engineers used the MAP and MAF in parallel to be redundant as a back up to such a radical change in A/F controls methodologies.
