now what

Not sure yet what the answer is yet but the problem is… my 99 F350 7.3 diesel is not running. I had it running at 7:30 this morning ran some errins kept the truck running during the stops and at 10:30 while driving down the road it died… it has a ½ tank of fuel and plenty of oil. Let it sit for ten minutes and tried to restart it, it started but didn’t run right but ran for 3-4 min enough for me to get it out of traffic. I opened up the fuel filter housing and it was dry. Had to have it towed. Now what? any ideas?

Where are you and how cold is it? If it is cold your fuel is probably gelled at the fuel pump.

Weather.com shows you to be in the mid-to-upper 20's up there in New Hampshire, so your fuel might be getting thicker than it should be.

The driving you did, however, should have added some heat to the fuel in the tank (the fuel bypassed back to the tank) so it may just be a simple (though costly) fuel pump problem. The "no fuel when drain valve opened" is a big clue.

Check all your fuses first, then the electrical connections on the pump itself. If I remember correctly, there is not an "upset switch" in the pump's circuit. The pump is located under the driver's floor, tucked into the frame rail. It's a round cylinder with hoses coming out of both ends and wires attached to the front end.

And now the rest of the story… Don’t ask me how but the fuel line had rubbed against the frame and wore a hole in it, some how no fuel leaked out but air was getting in and a mix of air and fuel was being pumped. And it turns out not enough fuel was being pumped as it ran out of fuel at the filter but I had a ½ tank of fuel. Fixed the wore line put in a new fuel filter and now it runs like it did before this all happened (I think I need an injector that’s next)

Where on the truck is the line that rubbed? And, glad to hear you found the problem.

Yes, I would like to know where, too. Have a picture for us?
