Question Check Gage

Hello fellow Ford Enthusiasts! I'm new to this site and hope someone can help. I live in Mass. and have a 2001 Ranger 4 X 4 w/4.0 Litre w/Automatic Trans. 58000 mi. runs great, change oil every 3,000. When I start it up and the temperature is 30 deg or lower, the check gage light stays lit and the oil pressure gage does not read pressure. After a short time, after warming a little, the gage shoots up and reads good pressure and the light goes out. It started doing this the end of last winter, and stoped doing it all summer. Now it started again. The colder it is, the longer it takes. Any Ideas? Really scares me.

Well, get your codes pulled (most parts places will do it for free, or you can do it if you have a scanner), then I'd say check your OP sending unit. Start with the codes though.

Your oil sending unit has gone bad. I've got the same truck, had the same problem, and a new unit solved the problem - apparently its pretty common

Many thanks RangerPilot, I forgot I still have a code scanner I bought for my '87 F-150. I hope it will fit. I suspected the OPS unit but now I'll find out tomorrow. Thanks again.

And many thanks to you also, PW01. Being new to this site, I wasn't sure if my responce would be attached to the post I clicked on or just add to the post. Once I thanked RangerPilot, I understood. Didn't mean to cut you out of my first thanks! Thanks again, I think this site is going to be very helpful.

In all likelyhood you have a bad sending unit. You can "go for it" and replace is as they are not too expensive, or for piece of mind hook up a mechanical gauge first to verify failure of the sender (ie, verify actual oil pressure). Pulling codes ( ) will be a complete waste of your time as there no relationship between your situation and the ECM storing information. Finally, your 2001 Ranger uses OBD-II and your 87 does not. Unless you sprung and paid for for a more comprehensive scanner, it won't be compatible. But as noted, you won't be needing a scanner anyway .

I'm going for it! As you said, a sending unit isn't that much, so why not? Thanks for the update on my scanner. Guess I have another eBay item! Thanks again Bill.
