I ran against a Duramax in the 99 7.3 with a 78hp Diablo Sport chip a few years ago. It was a little stop light race and the Dmax was faster, not sure if he had mods, he flicked me off when he drove away, ignorant child! I ran my 206K mile now stock 7.3 against my Aunts 01 65K mile stock 5.9 Cummins. Both trucks were configured the same however hers was long bed mine was short but I had about 500 pounds in the bed hers was empty. We ran from a dead stop to 75 mph to slow for traffic and it was neck and neck the whole way.
Stock 6.0's are faster in every category than stock 6.6's, but a 7.3 in stock form is much slower than a stock 6.6.
The 6.6 is an ok motor however it's known for head gasket failure due to it's aluminum heads and injector failures due to it's lawn mower fuel filter.
I'd agree with most of that except the head gasket / aluminum head issue which is non-existent.
7.3 is still an awsome motor for what it is - a dependable work motor.
Also I do have sitting right next to me a notice for a free upgraded fuel filter change right fo from GM. So hopefully that'll resolve that issue.
Im goin to get this guy in a PSD an then wecan change his name to PSDM-HD. He lurks over here so much. He really wants to get back in to Ford soon. JK man got to give you a hard time. Its Christmas time for a little fun. The battle rages on.
Experience really counts for alot when driving. With age comes better judgements and better judgement in hazardous situations. However, its also been proven that younger people will have faster reaction times.(for what its worth) As for towing, I think an experienced 18 yr old can handle a load better than an inexperienced 40 yr old. Im a farm boy and am 17 (nearly 18) and ive been driving since 14. I commonly haul 5,000-8,000 lb tractors from farm to farm at least 4-5 times a month. I started off with short trips towing when i was 16. I just take it easy and dont get in a hurry. (a deer in the road will really scare you going 40mph with 6000lbs behind you). I guess what I'm saying is that a 17 yr old is capable of handling a load with the proper training and practice.
Now back to the topic in hand, psd vs. duramax. I would go with the powerstroke. I got a buddy with one (with some bullydog goodies) and i know they can make some pretty awesome power. I suppose that a duramax could also make some serious power with the proper mods.
The problem is that you dont have a lot of hindsight Ford4x4. When your 35 things look a lot different than when your 17. Every drive is a hazardous situation.
I think one of the best things you learn while your driving is how to read the road. Whats happening with the conditions and what the people around you are going to do in the next few seconds. The better your read the better you can prepar for a problem. Reading the road takes much experience and a degree in psychology. Just kidding about the psychology, but you really get a feel for the other drivers after some years. When you can predict every move that they are going to make you will be much less likely to get in an accident. Thats just not something a young driver is going to know how to do.
That's not true. I'm a young driver, yet I can read the road. It's not hard to predict what somone will do out there. Experience brings you this capability, not age. The only thing I can think age would affect, would be the emotions, and ones ability to keep them under control.
i'm a 17 almost 18 farmboy too. i've been driving since i could reach the pedals.....my parents didn't know, but my grandpa on his farm would send me 1 mile down the road to the co-op to get feed in a 66 IH Loadstar when i was 11. I have been driving supervised since i was 7. My grandpa was a big beliver in makein boys men. and i'm still a boy sorry grandpa.
But i've driven alot. And i have buddy's that are the same way. I have a friend that drives his old caddy like it was a mustang, but when he's haulin cattle in his F350 PSD he drives responibly, probally because his dad will kill him if anything happened to those calfs.
But i belive an EXPERIENCED teenager with the right upbringing can drive as good or better than an older person. I don't have as many miles logged as ya'll, but i bet i've got the hrs to match. I still think an older person has better judgement. So i'm not gonna say i'm a better driver than someone else.
But how many people can double clutch or float gears anymore? I know i can.
To you younger guys who think you can drive as well as someone in their 30's and 40's:
As my father is fond of saying:
"When I was 18 I knew everything. Since then I've gotten progressively dumber."
The point is this: you think that way when you're 18. But you don't realize you think that way until you've had enough experiences to know better. For most people this is probably 30- something.
I'm not picking on anyone. I thought that way, everybody does. Just be safe.
True to a point. The only problem is that young age limits the amount of experience you can attain.
The only thing I can think age would affect, would be the emotions, and ones ability to keep them under control.
Very perceptive, especially coming from someone who is younger. Keeping your emotions under control is also known as maturity. Again, it's something that for most people comes with age. Maturity helps you to more accurately evaluate a situation for what it truly is.
ROFL what are you talking about Dmax HD, I thought hindsight was always 20/20.
I think the meandering threads are sooo much more interesting.
I remember when I was 18 and knew everything and was the best at whatever I did. Sigh, if I was only half as good as I thought I was. Guess you gotta learn how to do it somewhere. Nothing beats on the job experience.

lol, I'm 48 and I still know everything and am still the best at everything. That why the Dmax is a good contender but the PSD is still the best. Just ask me.
I have brother-in-law, brothers, friends, neighbors, It seem everyone here is mostly driving FORD super duties. I look at construction sites and contractors and mostly everyone is driving super duties. I see lot of trailers be pulled by FORD Super Duties. This proves one thing, if you want the best truck for towing and pulling buy a FORD Super Duty. I see F450 and F550 and up to F750 and the the work horse of america. Sure there is the Duramax, but it seems like there hauling light camping trailers. If you want a real truck buy what the rest of the working class of america is using, The Ford Super Duties or the F-Series truck. We haul a Case Backhoe (18,000 lbs) around my state and the PowerStroke can pull a load.
