Got a new CB today (uniden), for Tuttle 4x4-ing. (A Gift...from Dad for my BDAY-Yippee!!) Anybody have advice on which antenna to buy (magnetic mount.. clip on...--- and antenna placement. I'm putting it on the old '65. Tony had a magnetic one on the BII, but it kept getting knocked over so I don't think the roof is not the best place. I was thinking of putting it on the box rail... but the box is coming of next weekend. (No I am not going for Dual 8ft fiberglass lighted whips either....Sorry to dissapoint the hardcore rednecks.. ) So maybe the front fender?
I'm running a Wilson 1000 in the center of the top on Mule. With a 6' wire mast it really drags in the drive through. I have a cap that I use to plug the hole when take it off. It does very well as it uses the plain of the top in all directions. A rain gutter mount would work well if you don't want to put a hole in the top of your cab. If you mount lower and forward or rear you will loose range in the opposite direction. I have mounted them on bumbers before.
Which Uniden did you get? I'm a big fan of the 500 pro series.
I found a different one that I got at a truck stop in Salina. It's magnetic mount, shorter and spring loaded. I have had better luck with it. I also bought a short rubber magnet mount that would work great on the roof. Got them at Bosselman's (sp)
It all really depends on what you will be using the radio for, if you are going to be close to everyone you talk to like at tuttle with the others a mag mount will work great and pop off in the case of tree limb snagging. A long single wire whip like jack uses mounted to the top of the truck is a real good all around antenna. Twin whips like truckers use work best in front and behind the truck but they have to be mounted about 8' apart to really be effective. At least thats what the guy at the CB shop told me.
