Changing Gears

Hello,

I have a 2003 F150 Supercrew 4x2 with a 5.4l. I desire to change the 3.55 gears to 3.73 to give a little help in pulling my travel trailer. My question is do I have to get a chip to tell the computer what the new gears are, or can I just reprogram the computer directly? What would be the difference if I did nothing, just changed the gears? (BTW, I have no exhaust or intake mods, I have stock tires, and the only other mod I am considering is e-fans.)

Thanks
Brian

You don't have to do anything to the computer or anything else for a gear change.

IMO, going from 3.55 to 3.73 is an enormous waste of money. You will barely be able to tell the difference. If you are going to spend the money, go to 4.10s. Then you'll feel it.

Won't the speedo be off? What about the transmission shift points? What will 4.10s do to gas mileage? (I know gas mileage isn't that great in an f150, but I don't want to totally kill it!)

The speedo won't be off. The transmission won't know the difference, it will still shift at the same engine speeds.

Gas mileage will be worse empty and better towing, most likely.

I recently went from 29" tires to 30.5" tires (~5.2% difference) and the loss of power was immediately obvious. The difference between 3.73 and 3.55 happens to be almost the same, 5.07%. I will wait until I can get enough receipts to figure out my current mpg, but unless there was some improvement (unlikely) in my mpg, I'll be doing a 3.55 -> 3.73 swap sometimes in the summer time to get my original ratio back.

Some may argue but I agree with Andy 100%. The difference between 3.55 and 3.73 is very insignificant and for the cost of a new set of gears (and cost of installation if you don't do it yourself) I just don't think it's worth it. Again, this is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth. Aurgathor, I'm amazed that you felt such a loss of power with a radius change of only 3/4" on your tires. I made changes larger than this on VW Baja bugs I used to build and I couldn't tell a difference in power one way or another until I was making changes of 1.5" on the radius (3" total tire size).

Btw, what is the stock tire size on that truck?
