Heater Vs. AC milage

when i run my AC in the summertime (all the time in texas), i get really decent milage, but now that its colder, and i run the heater, it seems to be getting a LOT worse. i don't have a clue as to how the AC/Heater system works, but why does it get worse on heater than AC? its not terribly worse milage, just lower than normal.

Yeah, it's not your AC. The AC puts a small drag on your engine to do it's work. With it off that drag is removed so your mileage would improve.

I have lost better than .75 mpg since it's gotten cold. I credit it to the fuel, ebpv, and my truck just runs to cool . Last night on the way home from work I covered the grill and it stayed below the N on the gauge even after idleing for 30 mins. I drove big truck for 15 yrs and fuel milage always drops in the winter.

yeah, i had been attributing the loss to winter fuel, but on the days i didn't have to run the heater it seemed to get better milage. but yeah, overall recently, it has been lower, heater or not.

Another thing to consider is that if you have the heater control in the defroster or mix position I believe the A/C compressor is engaged. This is supposed to dry out the air before heating it.

I agree with mtncrawler, but I think the compressor also runs in bi-level.
As for the engine temperature, have you changed out your thermostat lately?
AS for your mileage, winter blend fuel most likely.

it can be caused by the coolant being to cool . it needs to be at a optimum temp for friction and engine wear to decrease. could be the engine with the heater on only sees 180 degrees or so. you need 195 for optimum wear and less friction. so it could be it is overcooling with the heater on.

I changed the Thermostat on my 96 to a 203F from the 195F and the temp gauge shows a difference, I think your 95 uses the 203F already but you may have a thermostat that s stuck partially open which will make it run cool. the temp needle should be about between the "O" and "R" in the word normal on the temp gauge. I had the 195F that was also not sealing properly and my temp just barely got into the normal range on the gauge.
