Hi, Just bought a 97 250 with 95,000 on it and the original E4OD. It came with the Banks power pak and was used to haul a 30' travel trailer. My question is what usuallay happens when the trans takes the dirt nap? Does it give any warning? I can't tell if it is slipping between 2nd and 3rd or if it just shifts that way. I just finished a 1,500 mile trip down to California and it never got any worse.
The original trans was designed to shift as easy as posible. It sort of slips into gears, then grabs. I don't think it should with the Banks on it, but I could be wrong. I thought the Banks was to apply more pressure so it shifted firm. They do a variety of things when they have a problem - leak bigtime, slip, no OD, won't shift, etc. Check the fluid to see if it is red and does not smell burnt. When was the last time it was serviced? Any idea how heavy the trailer was?
I have a 96 with 204,000 on the original tranny as far as I know and have a superchips tuner on it in tow safe it still shifts different than a gas job but I have had no problems yet. Make sure you service that tranny on a regular basis I do mine every 12000 to 14000 miles so far so good
Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure how heavy the trailer was, but the trans fluid was changed regularly. Sometimes it shifts more firm than others, just depends on how heavy I put my foot on the throttle. Otherwise, it is an awsome rig.
I have a 97 F250 crew cab 4x4 short box with the same tranny. Mine acts just like that. I was told (right or wrong I don't know) that it was torque converter locking up. it seams to me very wierd but it has'nt givin me any prob. yet. (knock on wood). If you learn more please let all of us at FTE know. Good luck.
thats the nature of these tranny's, mine does the same thing.(240K and 2 tranny rebuilds) Most of the time if you have a problem its electronic and the OD light will start flashing.
