I have an appt with a local service shop (non ford) tomorrow morning to get the starter replaced, but while it is there, I want to have him either service or inspect other components.
I have a front end squeak, not sure it is the shocks or something else. I also have sticky rear pumpkin clutches, but i don't think a lube change will fix it.
I guess my question is this, it's a 98 exped 4x4 5.4 liter (poster here and the exped site b/c i need advice quickly) with 83000 miles.
what are the problem areas that i should have him focus on? He said somethign about bad ball joints and a need to lube the pitman arm. maybe lube both. you agree? The suspension seems to have some play or loseness in it, so i want him to look at that too.
any routine or common problem areas or things for him to pay attention to are what i am looking for.
the suspension componenets can not be greased from the factory. might be time for aftermarket ball joints and other. those parts have zerks and can be greaed in the future.--- take the rear axle cover off, clean inside, change the oil and add the addative for limitied slip. that will fix the problem, unless it has bearing or excess gear wear. i owuld consider dropping transmission oil pan, change filter and add 5 quarts of new MERCON V oil. that is only 40% of the total, but good time to check insides and clean out any crud.
And remember.........call your bank and take out a second mortgage if you plan on letting the shop do all of those things!!!! I suggest doing all you can on your own.
first of all, it sounds like you have a bad pitman arm....replace it. secondly, dont go and have your transmission fluid replaced with 5 quarts of MERCON V unless its a 4R70W, then you would use 4.0 quarts.
The pitman arm is a notorious squeaker in these vehicles. Strong candidate for your problem. At 83k, I would have the front end given a good lookover for worn components.
How old is the fuel filter? An often overlooked maintenance component.
