Are all FE blocks for the most part the same or not? Will a 428 crank fit in a 390 block? Will it need to be machined? My boss told me by putting a 428 crank and rods in a 390 block you will have a 428, is this true? If so what would need to be done to do this? Any information would be helpful, thanks matt
I believe that would make it a 410ci. As far as for the "most part" they are the same, as in bolt on parts, the castings for the bores will be differant.

There was actually a 410 made, I think they put them in mercury's.
A 390 4.05 bore with a 428 3.98 crank is a 410
And a 406/428 4.13 bore with a 428 3.98 crank is a 428
and just to be silly a 406 or 428 with a 4.13 bore with a 390/427 3.78 crank is a 406.
I had suspected by boss was not quite right on that 428 crank in a 390. Thanks for the help. I imagine it is quite near impossible to find a 428 block nowadays isn't it?
Not really, no. Just have to know where to look. You can get 428 blocks from DSC for $450, or you can find a 360 / 390 truck block that will bore to 4.13". Not all truck blocks will bore to 4.13", but most will. A lot cheaper if you absolutely need a 4.13" bore for some reason, be it piston selection or trying to cram bigger valves in the heads.
The motor that i have is a 360 out of a 76 f-250. I bought the truck from a friend and tore it down to find that it had already been bored .030 over and had a steel crank in it. I was supprised to find that.
