Slipping Clutch Problem!!
Slipping Clutch Problem!!
I posted this in another forum. My daily beater has a slipping clutch problem. I plan on replacing the clutch this weekend. But, when I go online looking for prices, I see all kinds of clutch parts. I'm not sure if I am supposed to buy all of them or not. For example, I looked on Autozone and they have Clutch Bearing, Clutch Cable, Clutch Disc, Clutch Fork, Clutch Master Cylinder, Clutch Pilot Bearing/Pilot Bushing, Clutch Pressure Plate, Clutch Set-Matched, and Clutch Slave Cylinder!!! My first instinct would be to go with the Clutch Set, thinking everything I need would be in there, but in the description, all it says is: CONTAINS PREMIUM FRICTION, O.E. MANUFACTURED CLUTCH COMPONENTS. I don't know about you guys, but I hate getting a car/truck ripped apart only to find out you don't have everything you need, then you have to make a trip to the store. Any help is appreciated!!
OK, the first thing is that you NEVER buy stuff like that from Autozone. NEVER. Their parts are the cheapest made in china crap that you can find.
Go online and buy a quality clutch kit. You will not regret it when it comes with everything you need and everything fits together well.
I have no idea what truck or transmission you're talking about, so this will be general. You will need to replace the clutch disc, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and pressure plate. If it's a Mazda 5 speed, I would replace the slave cylinder also while you're in there. They like to leak, and they are a bear to get to. The pilot bearing is the hardest to get out. They make special tools for them, you might try renting one. You can also dremel them out, being VERY careful not to damage the crankshaft.

I went to a driveline shop and picked up the clutch kit for my ZX2. Its probably really close to the one in your Mazda. It was a LUK brand set and cost me just under $200. It came with EVERYTHING including the clutch disc alignment tool.
