1999 Expy

Hello everyone,

This is my first time postiong on this forum. My BIL just bought a '99 Expy XLT. It is in very nice shape with ~ 110,000 miles on it. I have a question for him about it. The odometer is digital and sometimes it will just go out for a little while, then it will come back on. Any ideas?

Also, is there anything in general that these vehicles are problematic for?
Thanx in advance for any help you can offer.

Bill

loose connection may be the problem

There are a couple of excellent threads in this forum (some with pictures) of how to fix the poor connections on the back of the display panel that seem to cause this problem. It seems like a bit of a hassle to get to the back of the panel, but one of the good posts is titled: "Odometer Blackout Problem Fixed!!!"

Thanx scottspoerry! That was a very informative post you suggested. I'll let my BIL know about it later today. Is there any other common gremlins on the Expys?

Another thing to look out for is the IAC valve. It causes our trucks to die intermittently, such as when coming to a stop or driving very slowly without using the gas pedal too much. It also causes rough running after cold starts.
This valve is located on the top of the engine behind the throttle body, and is secured by a few 10mm bolts. Some folks on here clean them out and reuse them. However it is a cheap enough part, and it is readily availible so you can just replace it with a new one.
BTW Good luck with your purchase!

The infamous head gasket leak

the 99's (mostly the 5.4l but some 4.6l) have a frequent problem with leaky head gaskets on the passenger side because of what was apparently a machining problem during engine assembly in one particular plant. The posts on this problem have been frequent and vocal. (some are huge) Even when the trucks were repaired under warranty, some repairs did not last. I have been lucky..my repair seems to be holdng up.

One of the things to remember about this forum is that you usually get a lot of bad news....not that much good news. But it's become my favorite site on the web and I hit it almost every day when I need a little break from work.

I bought my 99 4.6l from my sister and brother in law while its was still under warranty and ran it up to 75,00 miles and out of warranty pretty quickly. When I first starting cruising this forum I thought "Oh my God, this truck is just a mass of problems waiting to burst." Of course it turned out that very few of the problems have happened to me, but I feel much better prepared for when something odd does happen.

But I am absolutely prepared, becasue of this forum, for IAC and MAF and all those other darn sensor problems when they, of course, pop up!

Thank you so very much guys! I too frequent this site just about everyday, if only for a few minutes at a time. This site has been an invaluable place for me to visit for my vintage iron '77 pick up.

I will probably frequent this forum from time to time as my BIL may need answers on his "new" Ford.
